Smoke out of the defroster vents?

Question:
vehicle is a 1983 cadillac eldorado
car over heating and passenger compartment is getting steam out of vents without the ac or heater on,
when i tried to turn on the heater i got water coming out from under the dash. i first noticed yesterday that the defroster was not working i turned it on could hear it blowing but no air coming out of the vents
any help would be great!

heater core is blown. it isn't smoke, it's anti-freeze on the block. if it's coming out of the vents, the heater core is leaking and you are losing your water. fast fix is to disconnect the thwo heater hoses from the core at the firewall under the hood. you won't have any heat or defrost capability. but you will be able to drive it without losing any more water. that will give you time to replace the heater core. you may have to remove it by going under the dash, or by going under the hood, depending on how it's put in. the new one is fairly inexpensive, under $50, or so. also once you disconnect the two hoses, block them off or tie them together so you don't lose water.
if you can't do it, have it done in a shop. you can ask how to do it by calling a cad dealership, or go there and check on how it's done. they should have the drawings you need on their computer if you don't have a chilton's for your car.
