Theoretically yes, You would have to get the engine block cut and re-cast. This would require a new cylinder hear, crank shaft and virtually every other engine part as well. Cost to add 2 cylinders to a 4 cylinder engine would be around $8000 with all necessary parts and machining.

YES it is possible and one example is on display in the Science museum in London UK. In the early twenties there was an straight 8 alfa engine used for racing, incredibly rare and no longer available. Some one ( no idea who) commissioned a reproduction in the late 90's to produce an engine they 'manipulated' 2, 4 cylinder units to produce a single block straight 8 ( they also did use paired engines as well but they have separate blocks common cranks). No idea of the cost but it was substantial. As for an individual completing this task the impracticalities when compared to swapping the engine are up for discussion.
