How can you tell if your car's water pump is bad?

Question:
I drained my cooling system and filled it with water. Then I disconnected the outlet side of my heater core and started the car. If I held the outlet hose higher than the water pump nothing came out. If I held the outlet hose lower than the water pump then stream would come out but with no pressure (I easily stopped the flow with my thumb over the end of the hose). I had a garden hose turned on real slow and setting in the radiator so I would not run out of water. I connected the garden hose to the inlet side of the heater core and water came out the outlet hose with no restriction. So I was thinking maybe my water pump is bad. The car does not overheat and the water pump is not making any noises. I removed the belt and wiggled the pulley but could not feel any play. Is there another way to test if my water pump is bad? Sorry this is so long and thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure what sort of car we're talking about. On some cars, the heater isn't in circuit until the thermostat opens.

Getting a wheel off a 2002 civic type R?

Water pumps usually fail at the bearing. The telltale is either a leak or a squeeky sound. If the impeller or involute is bad, you would have overheating at speed.

Also, you shouldn't be putting garden hose water into your engine the mineral deposits will cause buildup. always use distilled water.

1993 GMC Safari Van Rattling going over bumps?

Usually when a water pump goes bad, it begins to leak. There is a small weep hole in the casting that will drip once the inner seal has started leaking. If that is not caught in time, the bearing will fail and the water pump shaft will begin to wobble or make a noise.

The only other possible problem with a waterpump is if the impeller has broken or come off the shaft. That might be hard to detect without removing the pump. The fact that your engine is not overheating would tend to rule that out.

Help! My airbag exploded?

Simple answer.....After the car has cooled off, take the radiator cap off, make sure its topped off. Start the car, have some one rev the motor while you watch the level in the radiator. As the motors rpm's increase, the level in the radiator should decrease. And you should see the coolant flowing inside the radiator.
