'99 chevy 4x4 transmission problem? Lost reverse and possibly one of my forward gears.?

Question:
I was taking off from a stop. About 20 to 30 mph I heard a loud noise like something broke. This is an automatic tranmission. I't felt like the engine was reving higher, so I pulled over. I went to back up but had no reverse. I put it back in drive and took off. I't felt pretty normal and shifted from first to second and maybe third. I never went over 40 so I don't know if I had overdrive. If you have any idea on what it is and approximatly how much it would cost to fix I wood appreciate it.

You probably blew the rear end. And if it is the rear end parts alone run about 600-1200 dollars. plus it should be done by a qualified mechanic.
