You can shift it into the R position but the car does not go backwards or you cannot even put the shifter into R? More than likely your transmission is worn out and you need a new one or get your rebuilt. Or you can go to a salvage yard and get another transmission for about $400 preferably from a car with low miles that was in a wreck. GM transmissions lose reverse a lot especially the 200r4 it is just a case of worn out components.If it's an automatic it's probably the reverse band. It could be a pump or a piece of trash in the valve body. It has been many years since I've worked on them but it maybe even as simple as changing the filter. Good luck

either stripped or broke, either way the trans has to be taken out
the choice is yours whether you want to do a complete overhaul
