I have a 1990 BMW 525i. The transmission was just recently replaced. I know this was dumb, but while I was driving, I accidentally put the car into park, and it started grinding really bad. It has one of those shifters down on the center console. It had a button you had to push to shift, which now doesn't work. The button is just loose and doesn't do anything when you push it. When it's in "park" on any amount of slope, the car drifts, and you hear a clicking sound from under the car somewhere. Is there a simple fix for this, and what is wrong. Also is this a sign that the transmission is only going to get worse. Please advise.

i own a repair shop,and it has stripped every one of the locking teeth on the transmission off of it,,you,ll have to take it in and get it repaired as soon as possible,,it has done some damage to it,,and the more you drive it ,,the worse its going to get,,have it repaired as soon as you can ,,good luck with it,hope this help,sFor people who know a lot about cars?
the parking gear in the tranny is shot, the tranny needs to be taken out and taken apart to fix it.id fix it soon because pieces of the gear could futher damage the tranny.it wont be cheap either try to be more carefull next time and good luck.Does antifreeze have a shelf life?
Bummer, it sounds like you've broken the parking pawl off. I don't think there is an easy way to fix this, and I would not want a piece of metal floating around in my gearbox...I'd get the shift lock button fixed too, so you don't accidently put the car in park when moving.
Oh, and don't push the button to change gears when moving.
