Question:
I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT and all of a sudden this morning it starts acting up. It would hardly go past 65, and then on the way home it would't go past 40. The engine was reving up but it would not speed up. I don't really know anything about cars but I'm thinking transmission maybe? If anyone has an idea from reading this of what it could be any info would really help. If it seems to you like the transmission is the problem, do you think it maybe fixable or more then likely need replaced? Also if you have a rough idea of about how much it could possibly cost would be nice. I'm not driving it again til I take it in to get looked at, hopefully soon. I have never had to take care of this kind of thing before so I have no clue what to expect, Im thinking expensive. I'm clueless and would like to have at least a small idea so I won't feel like a complete idiot when I take it in.
Answers:
Have you checked the transmission fluid? If not do so, it may just be low. If that's not it, it would be impossible to guess what the problem or cost would be, except it does sound like transmission.
car died while driving it--just had a lot of work done 3 months ago?
First thing to do is check the fluid level. if it is low, this will cause it to slip. If it is low, then you may have a leak in the system. Check on the ground where you usually park the car. look for some redish fluid with the feel of "oil". When you pull the dipstick out to check the level, have a look at the colour of the fluid, good fluid should be bright red, and not frothy. If the fluid is dark or brownish and smells , or is frothy then there may be some internal problems with the bands or contamination of the fluid. Are American cars cheaper to fix than foreign cars?
Change the transmission fluid and filter. Sound like the filter is almost stopped up and the pump can't pick up fluid. I had this happen to a Pontiac I owned.how do you put a car tire back onto the rim?
Is it an Automatic? If so you are probably low on transmission fluid and or a bad clutch pack. If it is a fluid problem fill with Mfgr. recommended fluid to the specified limit, and test drive. If this fixed it you need to figure out where the oil is being lost at. PS DO NOT OVERFILL the transmission, also if this doesn't fix the problem it could be allot worse. A transmission is around $1800.00 to $2400.00 replaced. If it is a standard (stick shift) transmission you have a bad (wore out) clutch, Figure around $500.00More Questions & Answers ...
