Hello,What is the year make model of your car? upto late 90s and eilier there are ways to check the codes yourself like GM and dodge. If it is a later model it will have a OBD II system which you would need a scanner to check the codes.

Goto your local auto store and they can read the computer with an OBDII code scanner and tell you what needs to be replaced..... dont disconnect the battery, that will not do anything to help you. It will not erase the hard fault stored in your computer.... only the OBDII scanner can erase the faults stored, plus your check engine light came on for a reason, so get it fixed.More Questions & Answers ...
