Question:
I have a Buick Century 2000. The handbook recommend 5W30 but the mechanic say 10W30 is better and change it. Is he right?
Answers:
where are the freze plugs on a 1987 chevy blazer 2.8 litre located?
10w30 verses5w30. when the car was brand new it had 5w30 in it, no matter where it was going. and the reason is because it was new and tight [no ware on the engine yet] after some mileage and the tolerances open up some 10w 30 is better because it gives more cushion. if you keep it in the garage 10w 30 is good, if you keep it outside and it real cold for months them 5w30 is good either way nothing bad will happen.Hellp restoring my bike gas tank?
Unless your mechanic is an automotive engineer, I'd go with what the manual says. How can you make your paint stay on instead of peeling off?
you can use 10/30 as long as u are not in a super cold climateDepends on the outside temperature in your area. Your mechanic likely wants to use 10W30 because that is what he buys in bulk. If you insist on 5W30, he may charge you a little more, as it costs him more. If I had a 2000 Buick with 50k or more, I would not hesitate to use the 10W30, as long as the outside temperature does not fall below the rated temperature of the oil. My opinion only.
It depends on the climate. the first number in the weight of the oil is the cold weight. Once your engine reaches operating temperature the additives in the oil expand and the weight changes to 30. They are both 30W at operating temp. The only difference is the cold weight. If you live in a warm climate the 10 W might be better. If you live where it gets very cold during the winter a 5W would be better. There really isn't THAT much difference between the two though.
If you get a good quality synthetic oil like Mobil One, you will be fine either way.
