some meters do use batteries but if you can't find a cover lets assume yours doesn't. Before you use it on your 12 volt system make sure it is a DC voltmeter and not AC for home use. If it is a DC unit set the scale on 50 since 10 volts on the scale would not be high enough. The black wire goes to ground or negative - and the red wire is for positive+. Connect the black to a grounding point like the chassis or battery - post. You can probe with the red lead and get voltage readings etc. You will get readings in the 12.5v range with the engine off.Hope this helps.

As it is a cheap volt meter it probable doesn't have a battery. If you could get your ride "pimped",how would you have it done ?
the settings are for the voltage levels you are measuring so it doesn't blow. 10 for up to 10 volts 250 for up to 250 etc.
What's another name for "premium gas"?
you enter the next highest scale at what voltage you are reading- ie, if you are working on a car- generally it is 12 volts DC so you would use the 50 volt range. Remember that DC voltage is pole specific. You have to put the black wire on a ground or - terminal and the red lead to a hot or + terminal to be able to read anything. Most voltmeters have a 9 v battery somewhere in the device.which is the intake valve and axhaust valve of catepillar 3160 engine?
