Question:
I have a 1998 Subaru Impreza. A 5-speed. I realize it's an older car, but I have taken good care of it and I can't afford to get a new one. Unfortunatly, the past year has been rough. I've had brake issues, an oil leak, needed a front axle, and now this...
Sometimes it feels like the clutch is going out. When I shift, it goes "wwwhhhheee" like I am just learning how to drive a stick. It smells like burning everytime I drive it. Going up hills is rough as is accelerating (like getting on a highway).
At this point, after dropping over $1000 in the last year, I'm afraid to bring it in. I know I need to though. I'm just hoping someone might be able to give me an idea so I can brace myself for the bad news. What could be the problem and how much might that cost to repair?

Car vandalized, should I take it to the dealer for repairs?
Sounds like your clutch is going out, the pads wear just like brake do and eventually need to be replaced. Last time I had that kind of work done it was close to $400, Check around tho there are some pretty handy neighborhood mechanics or kids in a highschool or college mechanic class that might do it for a whole lot less.Any ideas of what could be wrong with my 2003 Dodge minivan?
You may need a clutch. Hopefully an adjustment will take care of the problem ( take it in soon ). About $600.00 if needs to be replaced.Peugeot 205 diesel wont start?
take it in for a checkup and pay the 100 bucks. everyones guess which every body will give you their 2 cents is just gonna nickle and dime you untill it would have been cheaper to take it in from the startBad computer modual in 94 dodge caravan??
Best case the clutch needs replacement, worse case the entire tranny needs to rebuilt or replaced. Not cheap.sounds like its time for a new clutch. take it to a mechanic and have them check for sure and then call around for estimates of repair.
where is the sump plug located on a P reg vauxhall astra estate?
needs new clutch 300 bucks in parts.dont know cost but most definitely a clutch issue. if its a cable operated clutch it could just need to be adjusted but sounds like you driven like this for a while, so the fly wheel is probably damaged now too
if the heater blows cold air in my 1987 dodge dakota how do I fix it?
THE clutch job properly done should run 350$ . the reason it stinks is the pressure plate is beyond its limits of full pressure on the disk and its getting smoked (SLIPPING).where do i buy a 2004 chevy cavalier service manual?
Sounds like you need a new clutch . . .(sorry), if its gotten to the point where you can smell it. If you continue to "burn" it you will also need a new pressure plate and the flywheel resurfaced or replaced. Should have a new throwout bearing put in at the same time.Question for educated hot-rodders!?
Sounds like a clutch problem, bad clutch disc/pressure plate, possibly contaminated disc( from oil/seal leak), but more than likely, clutch-pressure plate-throwout bearing needs to be replaced. do not know your area, but repairs could be anywhere from $250.00- 500.00 in labor alone. Parts- in neighborhood of $150.00-250.00HOW DO ii BRAKE UP WiiTH MY BOYFRiiEND?
Any time clutch work is needed, it is best to brace yourself. It sounds like the whinning noise is you throw-out bearing.
The burning smell is most likely a failed oil seal. Either the flywheel seal is leaking motor oil on to the clutch disc,or the main shaft seal for the transmission is leaking gear oil on to the clutch disc. Check if there is oil leaking from where the trans. mates to the engine. Either way, they will need to be replaced.
I have a 1961 Caddy. The GEN light just came on. What does that mean?
New clutch. Go back to school on how to drive a stick! Sorry if this offends you, and the others that give a thumbs down. Suzuki and Subaru have actually defined the way a clutch should be built. Not to bust your chops! , you may have gotten a sub-par material laden converter, but they are the TOPS in stiick shifts.
Change it out, keep the car and drive it to 200k.
I have helped to build several Sam's to lvl 4 rock crawlers. And 2 Subaru's into dune runners. All of them utilizing the stock driveline.
I think you are probably used to using a Jeep clutch. Slow clutch, long throw.
Pay for the repair, and use it like a sports car, stomp and slap.....
If the clutch feels as though it isn't grabbing, your problem IS your clutch. A sure-fire way to tell...after a while of saving up your money for a new clutch, your car will just stop moving. This is because the material is gone, and nothing is able to grab anymore...
Clutches are simple systems. If the problem was your hydraulic system, your car wouldn't DISengage the clutch as if you were never pushing the clutch in the first place.
