Question:
I have a 2003 Hyundai Accent (standard transmission) in good condition. This morning, I let it warm up in the -22c weather and reversed out of my driveway. It was REALLY rough to shift to any gear. After 20 minutes of driving, the engine was warm but it wasn't any better. The temperature is down to -8c now but it's no better still. The gears are occasionally grinding, always difficult and the friction point is drastically reduced.
Please HELP! When I go get a smog check, do I have to change my oil first?
Could the fluid be frozen? Might I have damaged something unknowingly? Am I damaging it further by driving it in this condition?
Answers:
-22c (-8f)is not cold enough to freeze the fluid for your clutch. You might have a bad clutch cylinder (master or slave) or clutch plate. If your gears are grinding it's not good to keep driving it. Have a mechanic look at it.
