I bekieve the Mountaineer has shocks not struts, that said shock replacement is'nt to difficult but it does sound like you have more problems than just shocks.The ball joints particularly the lower ones tend to wear out on Mountaineers, i would have the front end checked out or at the least get a repair manual such as Chiltons or Haynes (you can find those at auto parts stores like Checkers,Kragen, Autozone, or Advance Auto

Its a job don't let anyone tell you different but my advice to you is to go to auto-zone or pep-boys get a couple of can PB rust-buster spray them down a couple of days and while there ask them to please print out a sheet showing you just how to do it, make sure you do the rust buster or your going to have a knuckle busterBurping out the cooling system?
