How much would it cost to replace a transmission pan on a Dodge Spirit '95. The transmission runs fine when it is full, but leaks out over a few weeks and has to be refilled with fluid. I don't want to rebuild the transmission, the car is too old to be worth that.

However, if it is just leaking, it may just need a new gasket. That will be about $15 plus the same labor. I would suggest that while you have the pan and gasket off, replace the filter.

what about the mess and the oil (tranny fluid) fthat you are leaving all over the road and parking lots ... I ain't no enviornmentalist but think about this ----- ------ just go to a tranny shop and tell the what you want done _____ a new PAN and that's it ...... if they want to re-build then you are at the wrong tranny shop .. find another and talk again .. do not get suckered into something that you do not want ...........Unless you have a bent pan, you just need a new gasket. All you need to do is drain the fluid, clean the edge of the pan and the transmission with a solvent, replace the gasket and put the pan back on... you must be sure to torque the bolts back on with a torque wrench to the specified amount of pounds, though or you could ruin the threads on the transmission.
Im pretty sure the shop will charge you way more than you are qilling to pay for a simple $10-15 gasket change if you are willing to do it yourself. Also, I wouldn't recommend driving on a daily basis with transmission fluid leaking, this can potentially cause serious damage to the transmission itself. You really should just try to find out where the leak is coming from and if it's coming from the pan itself, I would recommend changing the gasket. Just my opinion though!

The gasket should be $30 and the labor should be 2 hours. If you work on them yourself, then take out half the bolts, clean the holes and the bolts with carb cleaner,let dry, put loctite blue on the bolts, and put them back in and torque to 13 ft lbs., repeat the process on the other half of the bolts, and your problem should go away.Old gaskets often need re-torquing but they will continue to come loose unless loctite is used.
