It turns out that a short in the airbag system (they are still optional, right?) is causing the turn signals and horn not to function properly (they aren't optional, right?), so now what to do?

Took my 1999 Toyota Camry in for the 90k mile maintenance today..?

You could either unplug the airbags and try to troubleshoot it yourself or sell the car. -- List it on craigslist and someone will buy it -- or if you describe the problem and the model of car, some kind hearted soul might fix it for you in exchange for dinner.

why is my power out on instrument panel on my 81 300sd mercedes turbo diesel?

If you are going to tinker with the airbag system, be very careful -- the airbags actually have an explosive in them that has killed mechanics and tinkerers.

What the heck?

fix it anyway. if you get a car worth what your cars current value and the repairs are worth then more than likely it is going to have other problems that will cost as much as your repairs or more to fix. better off fixing the old car unless you have the money for a really good newer car. trust me, i have had alot of pos cars and if yours only has a short then you aren't that bad off.

What is wrong with my Car?

economics.. is it cheaper to keep it than get rid of it or is there some sentemtal value to the car. Take the car to another technician. The airbag system is along for the ride most of the time. If there is a short in the airbag system.. find out where the short is.. It only takes 12 volts for the air bag to deploy and i promise you if that happens it will ruin your day. The air bags are also called supplemental inflatable restraints(SIR). They are designed to blow up the air bag if you are in a collision involving the front of your car. There are sensors that are designed to determine if your impact is great enough to cause the bags to blow....there is a large wiring harness in the steering column of your car. that goes up to the horn, turn signals, emergency flashers, multifunction switch and in some cases steering wheel controls for the radio. My suggestion to you is to take the car to another technician that can find your problem for you. It may cost you a couple of hours of diagnostic time. A good technician may help you keep your car.. it depends...

Has this been diagnosed already by a competent technician ?
Who determined that the airbag system is shorted ?
I only ask because there could be an inexpensive or less expensive repair to the problem.
