I've got a 95 mercury grand marquis.
Recently it's been getting increasingly difficult to steer my car. The steering seems too sensitive and I have trouble staying in my lane sometimes.
I thought this might be the alignment and so took it in. They said in actuality the problem was corroded ball joints.
First, does this sound correct from my symptom? Assuming it does, this is definitely something I want to get fixed, I realize. But I was also just wondering---a couple months ago the passenger side ball joint area was squeaking. The mechanic I went to for something else said a rubber piece had torn around the ball joint and it was no big deal, and he squirted some oil on there for me, and I added some more when I got home. And the noise ceased. But, was that probably actually an early symptom of a bad ball joint rather than just a superficial rubber piece; and, is it possible I made it worse by adding oil, rather grease? I'm just now finding out the difference….

well, its been ten years, and its a heavy car, so i would check out all steering and suspension connections, you refer to staying in lain, also check wear on tires, if balding to one side could be caused by bad steering alignment, due to bad linkage,if you can go and move tire/wheel by hand in and out from top or front, something is loose and needs repair, the rubber is grease resistant , oil may deteriorate faster, was sign of wearing down,
if not keeping or selling, best get done with safety check, if you plan to keep for a few more years, best fix for now,

Dude.. get a new car. Don't even try to fix a 12 year old ford car. The problems will only get worse. It's falling apart, and it's an ugly car too.Once the rubber is split water and dirt get into the joint causing it to wear prematurely and to corrode. Once that happens it is better to change them for a couple of bucks then to spend a massive amount on towing fees, or getting in an accident when your wheel falls off. you can change them yourself in about an hour or so for about 60 bucks.

The ball joint can be tested for wear, lift the wheel with a jack , place a long metal bar under the wheel and lift upward any movement in the wheel will show.Plus the tire will wear uneven with worn balljoint.What does the 'CV' in CV joints stand for?
Jack it up and put a steel bar under the tire and lift up you u will see play at the joint. If not its could very well be yout Idler Arm when it gets loose it will make the car drift. Take it to a front end shop not B F good rich or another run of the line place. Look in the phone book and fine a in dependent place that specilizes in Ford and GM products and go to them.can i vaccumm out my heater core?
Make sure your tie rods are o.k. also and you don't want to be driving around with bad ball joints because your wheel could fall off and you would be screwed!CAll your ford dealer and ask for both lower control arms they come loaded with ball joints and new bushings dont waste your time trying to replace the ball joints as ford sells control arms as a service item meaning you cant just buy the ball joints and good luck with finding someone to do just the joints without hacking up your control arms.
Just replace the ball joints. Its not a big deal. They're a somewhat common problem on those cars. Also check tie rod ends & pitman arm. Your ball joints need changing for sure just by what you said about the squeeking. Had a customer lie to me about when his problem started, made him an appointment for the following week, next day his car came in on a wrecker. Ball joint let go, tire went into his fender, fender went into door. Not pretty. Don't wait.
