Astra's have awful manufacturers fitted immobilisers, if you have an immobiliser fitted to the car, it may very well be the fault. It's not something the main dealers are likely to find, they cannot track that far with their computer, and aren't allowed to make educated guesses. They will be able to fix it by replacing the whole engine management system, but the immobiliser is probably your only problem.If I buy a used car for 5k or less, what would you recommend?
You may not like this but if you let someone replace the entire engine management system you need to shoot yourself. If that is the only way out you would be better to scrap the car and buy a replacement, as your looking at around £550 to replace all that, but the cars only worth about £450 tops.

Depending on the actual cause it could be anything. It sounds like an alternator fault. Get an auto sparky to test it for you. If it is a second hand alternator is peanuts and about 30 mins to fit.Need parts for a 1978 buick skylark?

Hi there im afraid there isnt a lot that can be said here that will help you as you need to take or get somebody with an electronic code reader to analyse the fault codes that are stored in the memort of the cars electronic control unit (ECU). It doesnt have to be a main dealer although depending upon where you live they dont charge a lot for a Tech2 diagnostic as it is called, i would advise trying a mobile home tune if the car is unmovable see if they have the code reader thats all you need to ask for and then get them to read off the code. This will be in the form of a number which will be listed in a table and give a rough idea of where the problem is if the mechanic is anygood he/ she will be able then to test the component and the associated wiring and come to a comclusion. And if the ECU is faulty which i doubt as not many of them are the bloke saying £600 is living in cloud cuckoo land there you can obtain a second hand one and have that fitted easily the ECU i bought for my cavalier was £30 and i had to have it coded as i had an imobiliser on mine which was £20 ( you can tell by the key if it has a little red chip in it on a vauxhall) so dont go paying over the odds until the fault is diagnosedHope this helps
