Why is front wheel drive economically beneficial?

the air ride compressor on my pickup does not stay on to level truck after the start cycle?

Front Wheel Drive has more drivetrain losses to the CV joints (more time spent putting power through axles flexed farther than RWD), so it actually does have one economy disadvantage.

Where does vacuum hose connect to from the 4 wheel drive?

Otherwise:
It saves a little weight (the transmission and differential are usually one unit, and it doesn't have a drive shaft between the transmission and differential, also the rear end doesn't need to be as rugged).

It's easier (thus cheaper) to manufacture (but harder/more expensive to repair).

why would smoke come out of truck after it rains?

It takes up less interior space (no transmission tunnel), letting you have the same amount of interior/cargo room in a smaller car, and like another poster said, it is usually seen in cars which would be getting good fuel economy regardless, because the benefits of FWD are greatest in a lightweight car without much power.

Where can I get a factory repair manual for a Chevy Cavalier?

Apart from its packaging advantages, FWD isn't really more economical. It's just that, in economical cars, FWD has advantages that make them more livable and cheaper.

Help with transmission problem with my car!?

edit: Engine and especially transaxle repairs are what's a pain in most FWD cars (especially if it's a V6 or V8). CV axles (when the boot goes, you replace the AXLE, not just the boot) are a snap. Once you know what you're doing, it can be done in 20 minutes.

Can anyone help?

I don't know that front wheel drive is economical, other than the fact that it's usually found on cars that are not fast. An advantage to front wheel drive is better traction in slick conditions. This is because all the weight of the engine is directly over the front axel. A drawback is that you will have to deal with the suspension, and when it goes out or the boots are torn it's a pain to fix or $$$.

Have a '97 Jeep GC Laredo that has a hard time shifting from 3rd gear into 4th.?

it is more of a weight issue. front wheel drives dont have the added weight of a rear differential, a long drive shaft, a larger transmission, thus not having to have all the accompanying mounts and such. it is all compacted under the hood and leaves the rear to have springs/suspension and be lighter than rear wheel drive
