Question:
I want to convert my 84 Grand Prix LE to a hard top. All of the body shops that I have taken it to are not to crazy about the idea. There are some concerns about what might be under the vinyl. I already have the metal trim and deck lid from the junk yard. Would it be too hard for me to do the sanding myself? I have already put a new engine in it and new tires and wheels. I'm going for a muscle car look.

Typically, there is at least some light surface rust under older vinyl tops. near any tears or cracks it is usually worse. getting the top smooth enough for paint after removing the vinyl is usually the hard part, requiring filling and glazing putty after a lot of sanding, then more sanding. It can be done, though, and is a common job in many body shops. A trick for a temporary fix on white vinyl tops that aren't too bad is to use white semi gloss latex housepaint. it is a similar material to the vinyl top material, will fill lots of small cracks and imperfections. it will not hurt anything, and can improve the appearance quite a lot. since you've already done a lot, and invested some money, don't be discouraged. even if it turns out to be a lot of work, chances are there's no dents under the top to repair, although when the tops are put on at the factory, they aren't finished as smooth as tops that are to be painted. A good auto paint supply shop in your area can help you with supplies nd the techniques to use them.More Questions & Answers ...
