My cars axle might be broken?

Question:
as i was tryin to drive away my car started shaking pretty bad so i had to get it towed...when my car got dropped off i saw that the tire was turned slightly into the car...my dad looked at it and he said it was the axle but i looked at it and theres a little rod stickin out of the tire connecting to some other thing in the center of the car where theres another rod coming out connecting to the other tire. now i would agree that its the axle but whats kinda wierd to me is that this rod thats broken is very very small...its less than half an inch in diameter so im guessin that the axle would maybe be a little bigger. anyone have any ideas what it could be?

the little rod is definately your tie rod. there is an inner and outer tie rod though. from the way you described it i would say its your inner tie rod that broke. the price depends on the type of vehicle you have it should range anywhere from 20 to 80 dollars for the part plus labor to install it and yes you will absolutely need an alignment at the same time.

Tie Rods or ball joints will cause a tire to lean in or out. My son will give you more info in a moment. He knows more than I do.

2001 axcel?

If you hit a curb too hard you can break the tie rod. It is what steers the front wheels. If it breaks, the tire will want to go all the way to the right or left. That's if it is the front wheel.

1995 Toyota 4 Runner clutch help...?

Well lets see.... It really sounds like a Tie rod End. those are about 1/2 inch or 1inch diameter. Those are what steer your car.
Depending if this is a rear wheel drive or front wheel drive. if its a Front wheel drive there is a Axle called a CV joint that connects your Wheel to the transmission and what makes your wheels turn... Then you got the lower ball joint that allows Left to right motion and Up and down. some cars have upper ball joints and some just use the strut/shock in place of the upper ball joint. Which they call that a Mac Pherson Setup.. But Im pretty sure your tie rod end went. if thats all they run about $30 to $40 maybe cheaper when you replace the one side do the other side as well. But you need to have a shop check the rest of the front end while getting the alignment done. On rear end drive cars. I never heard of a Axle snap and those axles are about 4 to 5 inches diameter. and usually a bearing seizes or gears get chipped in those.

how hard is it to put a heater core in a 95 cougar?

And another thing that would cause that is a stabilizer bar. Those are well known to break and are about the same size and will make the tire sit all wrong.

the rack and pinion is your steering gear box on most cars now. the small shafts are the tie-rods. if one breaks the wheel will have no control
