Question:
I am looking to buy this 1998 ford taurus for 600.00. The guys saids the check ingine light stays on. When it is cold and you shift it in to gear it will shut off. But when it warms up it runs and moves fine. Why? What do you think it is...something expensive to fix or not?...Please help...don't want to buy a lemon. Thanks
Answers:
Well, id imagine its the torque converter because this is a common problem with taurus'. Yes its going to be very expensive to fix, if you do it yourself, you could probably rebuild the transmission for under $500, but if you take it in your looking at around $1000-$2000.
DONT BUY IT!
after it warms up, drive it to auto zone tell the guy what happens like you listed for me , he will plug in the code scanner & down load the list of problems, there is a code (check engine lite). there is no guessing or buying the wrong parts.my car did the same thing, turned out to be a $20 part, im sure the owner won"t mind you takeing it for another test drive. if theres lots of code then at least you"ll have a better idea of the cost !
That's a great price if the rest of the car is in good shape. It could be the torque converter stalling the engine, or the engine just being too weak at idle when it's cold. It's possible that something simple like clean fuel injectors would fix it, but you can only guess until you get it checked out.
Even if you put a remanufactured Jasper transaxle in it for $2200, you'd still have a pretty good deal. A used transaxle would be a grand or less.
