Rover 25 - won't go into gear with the engine running.....?

Question:
In summary, the car goes into gear with the engine off, but not when it is running. Neither the clutch pedal or gear stick feel strange, but gears (or reverse) can't be engaged whilst driving. Does anyone know what this might be and the best way to resolve the problem. Thank you very much. I did post this thread earlier but can't find it again to check for replies, apologies for any duplication!

I'm sure it's low on transmission gear oil. If the clutch was pooched, you would not move at all. Because you can shift when not running, it's not the linkage, just dry syncromeches (sorry, don't know how to spell it)

I have a brand new 305 engine.?

It happened to my friend, a common problem. the gear linkage gets caught on something when running (because it is too loose) , i would just get under the car and it can be fixed with a spanner

Blown/Cracked Head Gasket or what?!??!?

Cant be the clutch as the gears would grind when attempting to drive, must be linkage as stated above

Is it bad when you car belts squeek only sometimes?

sounds like a shift linkage problem exacerbated by motor and/or transmission mount wear.

how to remove the odor in my car?

Sorry mate it's your clutch! There's not enough clearance so the clutch is not 'stopping' when you try to select a gear. It works ok when switched off 'cause nothing is turning!
New clutch required!

I have a 1998 Explorer that kicks into 4wd by itself when it hits 25mph. Anybody know what's wrong?

you're lucky, at least the engine runs. Seriously you can try engaging a gear and depressing the clutch before starting the engine (be CAREFUL the car doesn't move unexpectedly) If you can do this and then drive more or less normally then the clutch is not freeing properly. May be the mechanism, warped clutch plate, or possibly smothered in oil leak.

Land Rover 110 diesel turbo oil leaks from where?

If you put the car it gear before starting the engine then start engine (with foot on the clutch and applying the foot brake)if then you can move off normally and us the gears as normal on the move it would be an indication that the clutch plate is dragging, if the car tries to move forward as you start it this indicates the clutch is not working properly a linkage or hydraulic problem possibly.
