Question:
I have recently bought a 53 plate Accent, 30k miles. Bought in October 06, around early december i started to notice an early morning squeal in the engine - happens most days for about 2 miles ish of driving, and is there when the engine is idle as well as driving. Stops after a while and usuall doesn't reappear during the day, apart from during the v. foggy days before christmas.
I opened up the bonnet one morning and it seemed to be coming from the cam belt but I wasn't sure. Should I be getting it changed?

The squeal is more likely to be coming from your fan/alternator drive belt. The cars charging system is working harder at this time of year with the lights, heater and wipers sometimes all on from when you start up. All these make the alternator work harder and for longer to get the battery up to full charge again.Check the amount of free play in the belt. By pushing it with your thumb, as a rough guide, you should be getting a deflection of about 25mm. Anymore slack and it needs tightening. While your at it also check its general condition, although at 30,000 miles it should be OK.
Same goes for the cam belt, at 30,000 miles it should be fine. Look in your hand book, it should suggest renewal between 65 and 75 thousand miles.
Any doubts then look in the local press, a lot of garages are doing free, no obligation winter checks at the moment and they should be able to pick up any problems
won't be your cam belt more often than not it will be your fan belt!
(if it was cambelt your engine would be shagged by now)
shouldn't cost too much too renew although it probably just needs tightening a bit, if you do it yourself be careful not to over tighten it as this could put a strain on your water pump bearing which would eventually lead to big bucks renewing your water pump!
Carefully place a soap bar on the inside of the belt while idling. If it stops the squeal it needs a new belt. (Or more tension)
Check power steering fluid
Good Luck

Why is when we use a coat hanger to try to open the car door?
It is more than likely that it is your alternator drive belt, when the battery is "down" after starting, the alternator demands more power until the battery has recovered. This drive belt relies on friction, so if a little loose or worn, can slip under the higher load and thus the squeal until the battery is charged and the alternator load reduced.Try tightening it to have about 15mm play in the centre of its longest length.
Your cambelt is toothed, therefore it cannot slip, a slipping cam belt would be disasterous!
Best and Fastest Way To Unthaw My Washer Fluid Container?
it depends how many miles it got . squealing may come from old timing belt or if it being replaced than it may be over tight it makes some squealing too hope it helpswhether the cam belt or the fan belt it is too loose, when it is wet, moisture may get between the fan/cam wheel and belt. It is no danger but i would get it replaced. If it is still under warranty, this will be covered by the main dealer but if it is not, i would just buy an after market one of the same size as these are up to two thirds cheaper than buying one from Hyundai, you can replace it yourself rather easily but it may be helpful to get a second pair of hands.
the fanbelt is wearing, easy and cheap to replace, just be sure to clean the pullys before installing the new belt. the belt runs the alternator and powersteering pump so its not very complex, easily something you can do yourself, 15-20 min tops. use a wrench on the belt tensioner to push it out of the way, take the old belt off, clean the pullys, re install. stand back and admire the work you did and the $100 dollars you just saved.
