The mechanic wants to charge me $2,000 for a head gasket. (whatever that is). The car can't be worth much more than that and I can't afford that much anyway. Could it be something else? If not, is $2,000 a fair price?

2000 is a steap price to change head gaskets. Unless he is putting new heads on it. How much fluid we talking here on a daily bases?

no,,2000 isn't a fair Price for a 40 dollar gasket,,you can get a new engine for less than that,, don't have him do it,hes going to rip you off big time,,i own and operate a repair shop,and i usually do this job for around 500 bucks ,,and that's for both heads,,i always do both of them,,but he,s absolutely insane ,,on his price,,take it to a good shop,,where they haven't lost there mind yet,,good luck i hope this help,s.does any one know of any shops that tints taillights in louisiana?

1. If the mechanic pressure tested the vehicle and found no external leak, it is most likely your head gasket.

2. You can do some simple checks yourself to see if it is the head gasket (this will check for large leaks and may still need a head gasket if these tests are negative).
a. Pull the oil dipstick and look at the oil. Is it milky looking (head gasket) or does it look like oil?
b. Take off the radiator cap (make sure the car is cool or you can get burned) and look at it. Is there a oily grunge on the bottom of it (head gasket) or is it clean?
c. Remove the oil cap and look inside there and at the cap. Is it milky looking or do you see water (head gasket)?
3. Take it for a second opinion. Some places will look at it and tell you their opinion for free.
