What should I check for or suspect when check engine light come on?

Depending on the yr you can drive your car from the get go but drive easy. When your defroster is getting warm air you can drive like you normally do. Older cars don't have engine management system to allow a fast warm up and should idle only for a minute or two any more develops hot spots inside the engine and reduces engine life.
