1984 Nissan Urvan Diesel Oil light on?

I have a nissan urvan diesel with the oil light on. The light was flickering so I checked the oil level, it was a bit low but within the limits. Topped up to correct level and when I started the van the light stayed on. I have not driven the van yet as I dont want to damage the engine. Could it be a faulty connection as the engine does not sound rough? Has anybody come across this before?

you need to make sure the engine has oil pressure you can take a valve cover off and see if oil is coming out aroung the push rods. if not then oil pump or oil pump drive is bad, if there is oil then you probably have bad oil press sensor or wiring. but you could still have bad oil pressure even if oil comin up around rods. also change oil filter and oil if hasnt been done in awhile
