Question:
2001 used chevy lumina (i have no maintenance records)
no thermostat, so enginge does not get up to temp, so heat isnt the problem
leak happens at the heater core
ive been through 3, and then got the coolant system flushed, but dont want to buy another one not knowing what is causeing this.
Answers:
Is there such a thing as "wrong" coolant for a car?
ISSUE:Some vehicles may exhibit (repeat) heater core leaks. This may be caused by a chemical reaction called electrolysis. Electrolysis involves an ion exchange between the heater core and engine coolant which can result in a breakdown of the heater core material.

You say you've been through 3 heater cores , just wondering how long it takes to put one in a lumina.
And it sounds like Electrolysis is the problem in your car
I have a 1961 Caddy. The GEN light just came on. What does that mean?
Electrolysis. Take the car to a reputable service center, and have them do a voltage drop test. Probably have a bad ground connection. Very common; easy fix.How easy or difficult a job is it to replace the idler pulley for a 1995 Saab 900 SE Turbo?
I've seen bad radiator caps do this very thing. The cap is designed to allow the system to be pressurized to around 15 PSI, which raises the boiling point of the coolant. A sticking cap can allow the pressure to rise much higher than this, causing the weakest point of the system to leak.i cant get the alignment motor to work after i replaced both headlamps?
Of course, it could be something else...why on earth would you not have a thermostat?
98 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 L started bucking & jumping?
Every car has a thermostat. Besides that, I think it's your coolant? I remember a recall on some of the cars that were using that new coolant. Supposed to be environmentally safer then the original.More Questions & Answers ...
