Yes it can clog up heater cores and other required water passages in the motor on newer cars=It will be OK if you drive a 72 Chevy as they are not as full up with coolant passages.Cadillac makes a sealer designed for aluminum engines (which most are at least 50% now) to make up for a design flaws in the Norstar motor(leaked from the beginning) and you can buy it at a GM dealer.Follow the directions and you should be fine. I have heard of guys just pouring the stuff in a driving off, blocking up their radiator and frying the motor. Keep your eye on the temp and if it gets hot, you may need a new radiator. Try the fix as it is cheaper and then be careful not to boil your motor.

Bars Leak works well. I've used it in the past without any problems.
Mind you, it's not going to work miracles like plugging bullet holes in an engine block. But for a small leak in a heater core, or radiator it works pretty good for a while.
it is always best to have your cooling system sealed properly the over-the-counter should not dammage it however if you use too much it may clog
