1990 Silverado PU transmission shifter linkege problem?

Question:
My shifter stopped going into 1st and 2nd and 5th and reverse.
It is stuck in 3rd neutral or 4th.
The shift lever became more and more lose until it quit working.
I have pulled the rubber boot off and found a 4 bolt cover and
am afraid to look further to possibly repair or tighten something
to avoid costly repairs...
Does anyone have ideas or knowledge to fix my problem?

you have two devises in your manual transmissions one is and inner lock that keeps you from falling out of gear the other is your detente witch keeps you from shifting into two gears at once if you don't know what you are looking for I would bring it in. try a dealer they should be a bit more trust worth
