All internal combustion engines use the same basic technology... Intake, compression, ignition/power and exhaust. It's just that a four stroke has four distinct phases, controlled by valves opening and closing, while with a two-stroke engine, intake and exhaust happen at the same time and are controlled by movement of the piston.

It would be impossible to explain here without cutting and pasting from a web site. Suffice it to say that FOUR stroke engines go thru FOUR cycles in their power mode. TWO STROKE engines only go thru two cycles. Thus the difference. 2 bangers use ports (holes) to suck in gas mixture. 4 bangers use valves and thus produce much more power than 2.4 stroke cycles = intake, compression, power, exhaust
