Hi! I own a Mustang II 1974 v6 2.8 with auto transmission.
Lately even with the pedal on the floor it wont shift into third gear it stays on second and 80mph.Before a get the car for repair becose i dont trust the mechanics:) can someone give me a hint if its a serius prob? whatis the cause? can i fix it myself? Thanx!

It sounds like the Governor is going to the ghost,the downshift linkage from the engine could also be stuck in WOT mode

check trans fluid.. maybe lack of pressure.. or could be the brake bands or blocked filters etc.. either way you will need to remove the pan.. and no there is usually no drain plug so the stinky oil goes everywhere...yukYes i would change the fluid first, new filter and everything then put the recommended fluid and.....the most important additive i would put in is LUCAS transmission treatment it worked for me BIGTIME. My car use too slip constantly until i added this treatment. A miracle in a bottle, try it its worth $9.00. And if that doesn't work you need a tranny mechanic for sure.
