I have a 94 Sable, 6-cylinder, with 70,500 miles on it. For the last few days, when it is in Park, it is reving up and down, from 500 to about 1000 rpms. The lights will dim, and go to normal. If I leave it running, say, to warm it up in cold temps, it will eventually konk out. It is running rough when I get it up to 45 mph and above; I thought it may have been a tire, but they are fine. I asked a mechanic at work today to take a quick look at it today. He said it smelled like it was running rich, and it could be a vacuum line or the EGR valve. Another mechanic can put a scanner on it, but I can't do it til at least Tuesday. It is fine when I am at a stop when in Drive, although you can hear it pulse as it is downshifting into first as I'm slowing down. It is only doing it in park, and will start after about a minute or two after it has been idling. Could it be the EGR valve, and how hard is it to replace if I was to do it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Kind of sounds like a vacuum leak. The easiest way I found is to get a can of aerosol carburetor cleaner and start spraying. First, spray some directly into the air intake to see what kind of response you get. This way you kn ow what will happen when you find a leak. Slowly spray on every hose and connection you can find. Try to be as precise as possible. When the motor reacts, you found the leak.ford galaxy . is there a specific way to connect wiper linkage to wiper motor , tried and tried ?
The other problem might be the idle up motor or idle compensator. That one might need the scanner to check. Or you can take it off the engine and check inside it to make sure the piston is clean. Hope this helps, good luck.
