I have a 04 Saturn Ion-2, quad coupe that has 44K miles and it refuses to start when the temp is below 32 deg.
When it smokes check to see if the exhaust has a sweet smell o it. Thi usually indicate that it is a head gasket. Also check the oil dipstick to see if the oil is a milky color and texture. Check the radiatoror overflowtank to see if it is milky also. these are signs of a head gasket problem. easily fixable. to check to see if it is a valve seal or ring. you can do a compression check on all cylinders. check with a mechanic or a manual to compare what the compression supposed to be. An easy check is to have the engine run and open the oil filler cap to see if there are smokes coming up through it. that is a sign of valve seals or piston rings. if your vehicle is turbo charge and you have been running it over factory spec turbo boost pressure, you might have broken a ring land on the piston. but from what i have noticed from other VW turbo vehicles that that shouldn't be the case. if it smokes when you start it up after letting it sit for a while, its valve seals. i think that piston rings will smoke all of the time, but im not 100%.

What color is the smoke? If it's blue the engine is burning oil, probably because of worn piston rings. If there is a lot of white smoke it's probably water getting into the cylinder from a cracked head, block or a blown head gasket.
