I am looking into buying a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback and the seller said it needs the engine mounts tightened. I know nothing about cars... is this a big thing? Pricey? What does it do if they are not tightened? The car is only $600, so I want to know if this is worth it.

Going to cost around £150 ($300) to replace them and thats $100 labour. I had all four top suspension mounts replaced. To be honest they didn't need doing after getting the old ones out, its any rubber that gets wet a lot that needs replacing.

more then likely, you will need to oreplace them, not tighten them up...costs around 80 bucks for both front and rear...howeevr, the install is allot more money, where the engine ahs to be lifted up slightly to put them in..another 100 bucks or so...tell whoever your buying it from to replace it b4 u buy it...good luck !Who regulates car mechanics or MOT centres?

If not fixed may cause premature differential failure.
Usually just need to replace the old mounts. Support the motor from the bottom with a floor jack or the top with a picker and then remove the old mounts and put in new ones. Prolly take half a day with hand tools and experience. Cost of mounts new (est. $50 each) 4 mounts on this model. May get by using used ones or motor mount inserts made of urethane. (Suspension Techniques brand $35)

Don't trust the seller. It will probably need new mounts. Not a huge deal, but the car is 28 years old. If it only needs engine mounts, why is he getting rid of it? $600 for a Honda aint bad unless there is a problem that is being covered up. Before you buy, take it to a good shop and let them check it out for you. Maybe cost about $40-$60. Honda builds a good car, but a lot has to do with the maintenance that has been done on it.
