if the engine is ceased then it will not start...there may be a crack in it....have you tried the spark plugs and distributer cap and cables...if that is your problem then it would be inexpensive to fix...gm steering pump on a 85 pontiac gran prix?

Maybe its the starter solenoid if the engine itself isn't locked up. Also you might want to try "short starting" it where you connect a hot wire from the battery directly to the starter relay (completely bypassing the ignition system in the car). Either you have a frozen bearing on the crankshaft (ran out of oil) or the timing chain/gear has come out of sinc and one of your valves are interfering with the top of a cylinder unless you just don't know that the starter selenoid or wire is bad, and you just don't know it.what would cause you to not have oil pressure in a 97 grand am?

Sounds like you have a siezed up engine. If i had more information on this i could diagnose this problem for you. Did the car overheat the last time you drove it? When was the last time you checked the coolant levels, oil levels. Need more info from you on this.
Double check the connection, it may show Volts at the starter connection, but check it as you try to turn the motor over. If the volts drop below 7ish, and you've had the battery volt-drop tested and it's good, you may simply have bad battery cables. A poor ground connection will not let the current flow properly. And a starter may look good, but even new out-of-the-box ones can go faulty soon after installation. For clarity, with the engine crank, but not start - or not crank at all? If it doesn't even TRY to crank with all battery/starter areas OK, check your park/neutral switch on an automatic transmission, or your clutch position switch if you have a manual.
