Depends on the condition of your car. Whats it worth ? Do you love the car or hate it? Did water get into the oil? If water is in the oil replace the engine If no water in the oil replacing the head gasket is all you need to do. Make sure they plane the head and check the block for being flat. If both are good it should be no trouble to fix. Good luck hope I helped.

Skipping/popping/mis-fire coming from the engine on a 1997 GMC Sierra 2500?
It depends on how long you ran the car with a blown head gasket. When it began to overheat, did you "push" for that extra mile or stop immediately when the lights on the dash board came on?I have a 96 honda accord and recently my dashboard has shown a breaklamp light. What does this mean?
Blown head gaskets exist in all cars, not just Fords. It comes with the territory of mating two metal parts together.
Done properly, after replacing the head gasket, your car should run fine. This includes getting the engine head inspected and machined if necessary. So I guess the real question is how much faith you have with your mechanic and what type of warranty he is willing to offer. A properly rebuild engine will typically last as long as your original engine, and $1500 beats having a car payment.
