Time to get a professional involved. If this were carburated instead of injected, I'd suggest looking into the automatic choke, which can stick and not open and floods the engine, making the gas smell. My 71 VW bus suffers from this problem once in a while. Have you checked for leaks in the fuel system? I seem to recall this model has a fuel pump in the gas tank. It has been a while since I worked on a Cutlass. Most injected engines have an electric pump which pressurizes the fuel system prior to engine start. Check for leaks. You may be able to simply turn on the ignition without starting the engine and then look under the car for dripping fuel. If you are sure there are no leaks, take it into a shop so they can check out the computer control, which takes a professional with the right equipment. You can't DIY with the engine control computer.Either the gas tank sprung a leak or knowing Cutlasses the way I do, the catalytic converter has rusted out and is leaking gas out the tail pipe under your car thru little holes in the exhaust. Have someone lift your car and check it before a fire developes under it. It happened to 2 friends' Cutlasses that way.
