A supercharger is gear driven usually with a pulley and belt from the engine...whereas a turbocharger runs off of the exhaust. Both have there good and bads.. I preferr a Supercharger :)

To give some more detail. A Supercharger is driven by the engine, usually through a belt drive. Its running all the time, which means that its adding power as soon as you pull away. The turbo charger is driven by a turbine in the exhaust, which in turn turns a turbine to that pressurises the engine intake.

Benefits of a turbo charger are that no mechanical connection is required and no engine power is used (although not a lot used in autos anyway). Downside is that even in the best installations there is 'lag', which is the delay that occurs between operating the throttle and any benefit from the turbo is felt. Also tends to make the engine area hotter and some heat protection is usually required in the vicinity of the turbo.
