Question:
Somehow my O2 Sensor rusted off of my exhaust manifold, taking a ring of the manifold with it. The dealer tells me that they have to replace both the manifold and the converter because it is part of the one piece. Is this true? Is $1200 for the service unheard of?

No, not true... the ring that came off the manifold is call an oxygen sensor "Bung" The Bung is the round peice of metal the O2 sensor screws into, you can buy Bungs and weld them anywhere into the exhaust system you want. How to test the coil-springs on a 1982 chevy monte carlo?
The convertor is not a part of the manifold. You have an exhaust pipe that bolts to the mainifold and runs to the convertor. You do not need a new convertor, just someone to re-weld the bung back on the mainifold, or a new manifold if it is that rusty.
