Car smells?

Question:
In the car, after we got gas while the heat was running, our car started to smell like something was burning. When we got here, it had started to smell again. Once I got out of the car, I smelled inside/under the hood, and it was definately something in there that was smelling. What could it be, is it dangerous, and can we make the 20 minute ride home?

So far, you have some pretty good advise here.
BUT------>
Consider this: IF you do try to drive it back home (All will PROBABLY be fine) and think that the car has caught fire, pull over to the side of the road and exit the car promptly. Do not allow anyone to stay in the car.
And FURTHER, DO NOT open the hood. Wait for the fire department to arrive and open it.
If YOU open the hood, you will ventilate the fire, and you run the risk of very serious burns and disfigurement. When the hood is opened on an under hood fire, the sudden exposure to both convection and fresh oxygen will cause the fire to flare.
Play it safe. Though the car is expensive, it can be replaced.
Your face and hands cannot, nor do you want to deal with the pain and recovery of 2nd or 3rd degree burns.

Transmission for my Ford van?

Could be a plastic bag, or debris got caught underneath, and is touching the exhaust. May need to find a way to try and get something under there to knock it off, or worse yet crawl under to pull it out. Good luck. If not able to do so, then you might be ok. Just pay attention to it like your doing, so as not to catch fire.
