Your Taurus don't give a rip about soccer (nor for that matter do I but I digress).There are untold numbers of things that can cause this condition. More information necessary ---
1) Does the "Check Engine" light come on?
2) Does it occur all the time or only when
2a) it is hot?
2b) it is cold?
2c) just after fuel-up?
3) Is the transmission fluid full?
4) Been tuned up in the last 30K?
5) Has the fuel filter been replaced?
6) Have you "Washed" the engine area?
Read the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under your hood and determine of it is OBD II compliant.
If the car is the early iteration of OBD II (some Fords started in 1994), drive to the local discount parts store and ask the nice folks there if they would read the diagnostic codes for you. If there are any stored, write them down.

Disregard the part about the meter.
Sit in the driver's seat and pay attention to the "Check Engine" light. It will begin to flash out the codes, similar to Morse code. Don't space off, you must pay attention. If you think you goofed, or are not sure you got it all, turn the key off for > 20 seconds and start over.
With the codes in hand, refer to the chart for a description of the code, and refer to a repair manual for proper diagnostic and repair information.
If you don't want to attempt repairs yourself, at least you can have a more informed conversation with the repair facility.

i would say its your fuel system or you need a new set of plugs and wires.Sounds like it could be the fuel pump; take it by a garage and have a fuel pump pressure test done before you start replacing a lot of parts. Test usually cost $0.00 to have done. May want to find out what it should be first unless you can trust the mechanic.
