Why should I change my transmission fluid?

A good compounding job should remove the scratches as well as the oxidation on the paint.then a nice polishing job with "NuFinish" or "Wet Look" should help restore some of the shine, lustre and color saturation and get 'er looking pretty good. Thats the cheap way...circa $10.

The expensive way: Take it to a good detailing place or body & paint man...for about $100-$200 (depending on how bad it is) he'll give it a professional compounding and polishing...and make it look as good as possible.

Depending on how long you're planning on keeping the car: Polish it with transmission fluid..it'll make it look new- but I don't imagine the long term effects on your paint will be too healthy- but if you're not planning on keeping the car too much longer, or are planning on getting it repainted down the road...

There are products off the shelf that "claim" to restore the original color of your classic blah blah blah. I've tried and it doesn't work. What's most likely happened is that, over time, your clear coat has lost it's ability to protect the color and the sunlight has faded it. The best thing to do, if the car is worth it to you (or if it's a classic that you intend to sell) is have it repainted professionally. Since it is only 15 years old (and that's a long time for paint to last), the VIN tag will contain the paint code for the dealer to decipher what the color is. Most good paint shops can use this info in their shop without having to use the dealer.

What do car repair shops consider a tune-up?

I'm not 100% certain on the manufacturer, but I believe either ZyMol or Megiuars market a paint "clay". Truthfully, this is going to be quite labor intensive, but the clay is designed to remove years of road grime, sun damage and other airborne pollutants from the finish of your vehicle. The current condition of your car will determine the final outcome of the effort though, as this is not exactly a "miracle cure" for your paint maladies. If you were to combine this with buffing the car with a random orbit buffer, high quality wax and cleaning, you in THEORY should be able to restore SOME of the original luster to the vehicle's finish. Again, I have to stress as my advice is sight unseen to the condition of the car, that if the paint is REALLY deteriorated, there is only so much you can do. If you have a reputable auto parts store in your town, I would start there and talk to them in person as they won't try to sell you on a new paint job, which is what you most likely would find if you went to an auto-body center or paint shop. The other added benefit of the clay is that it will fill in some of the scratches to some extent. Hope this helps.
