engine KNOCKING HELP!!?

I think you have to put it in 'park'. Silly - if you keep it in gear or in neutral it will roll. When you shut off the engine - ALWAYS put it in park. Applying the hand brake is a good idea on a slope.

#1 mistake people make with a manual shift car, they don't use the handbrake ALL THE TIME!!
Just by driving around the dust and water work their magic and corrode the cables and parts.
If you use the brake all the time then these stay fairly clean and continue to function.
If you are lazy and only use the handbrake on hills, you will find it will not release one day. That corrosion gets pulled into tight spots when you apply the brake. When you release it there is not enough tension to pull the parts apart again.
