As others have already posted, that method of slowing down and bringing the vehicle to an eventual stop is the best way to prolong the life of the clutch components. Downshifting is the method that wears out the clutch the quickest.

When applying the clutch, friction is created when first applying, and when letting go. When the clutch is fully depressed, you are in complete contact with the engine's flywheel, and no clutch surface is being worn out. So it's ok to step on the clutch and leave it depressed while waiting. It will wear out less, however leave your leg tired on long lights. On the brakes side, putting the car in neutral and braking wears out your brakes faster. You will make your brakes last longer by downshifting, then braking to complete the stop. But then if your worried about fuel efficiency, every time you downshift, your engine revs go up, and your gas mileage will go down slightly. Either way you go, it's a give and take. You can not have the best of all worlds, no matter what you do.

The "correct" method for coming to a stop with a manual transmission is to downshift through the gears until you come to a stop, and of course put the transmission in neutral and let the clutch up as you describe.but this takes some practice.

I need help with my homeschool mechanic stuff...?

There is nothing wrong from a mechanical standpoint with your method. The only downside is if you need to get on the gas real quick and you are out of gear - well that can potentially be a problem, but no your method will not cause any undo wear on the clutch or anything else.

What do u guys put on your truck?

Generally I will coast out whatever gear I am with the brakes (unless I'm in overdrive and I'll usually downshift to 4th) and then shift into neutral and complete the stop with just the brakes.then tends to save a little gas as well...

DEPENDING ON YOUR CAR YOU MAY NOT EVEN NEED THE CLUTCH TO PUT YOUR CAR IN NUETRAL.. YOUR CLUTCH ONLY WEARS WHEN YOU ARE HOLDING THE PEDAL LONG ENOUGH TO HEAT PLATES. A QUICK JAB AND SHIFT DOES NO WEAR. IT IS THOSE UPHILL STARTS FROM A STOP OR A 1ST GEAR START WITH A LOAD AND MOST OF ALL THOSE FAST TAKEOFFS WHEN YOU FEED THE CLUTCH TO GET A "PEEL OUT" OR BURN RUBBER THAT DO SIGNIFICANT WEAR.

In braking it is not safe to put car in neutral and coast because you have no control of your car if you had to move fast for some unknown reason. Best way to slow down for a stop is to take foot off gas and brake as needed.gear down as that will aid in braking...when you are preparing to come to complete stop then put clutch in and hold brake.keep car in gear ready to move as needed. You will do no damage to your clutch in doing what you ask but it is just an unsafe situation because you have lost control of your car in doing that.

Ask any expert. That is the proper way to drive a stick and come to a stop. It is cheaper to change brakes then a clutch you are doing it right. Don't ride the clutch.
