96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 motor and auto trans shifts ok when cold but when gets warm 2nd to 3rd is slow?

Question:
Some times you have to let off and coast then reapply throttel, rpm may go to 4000 or better maybe two three times before it will up shift. once it shifts it seems to go to overdrive ok. But it doesn't do it all the time, but is getting more frequent, we had the trans serviced and filter changed the fluid doesn't smell burnt, and didn't look bad, wasn't anything in the pan. Jeep has 88K on it and has been driven easy by my 82 YO dad (owned it 8 years now)

Answers:

transmision slipping , check engine light comes on, high idle?

I am using the girlfriends computer at the moment so dont let the id throw you. It sounds like theres a problem with the shift servos in the auto tranny. You can obtain them from a quality autoparts store and install them yourself. If you do that you will need a tranny manual it should be available from youre local auto tranny repair supplier. Make shure on any mopar that you use the fluid recommended in the owners manual. I had a friend that had his tranny serviced and they put the wrong fluid in it this caused the identical problem with his truck. If this seems like too much find a reputable shop and they should be able to fix it without replacing the tranny. If it were the clutch packs or the bands it would slipin all of the gears. be adament and dont get swindeled. Good luck.
