What to do about my 2000 Plymouth neon?

I just bought my 2000 neon in september and it now it has a little over 96,000 miles on it. I'm afraid that my engine will go out soon, but i gave done little to no maintenice on it. Should i get rid of it or wait until the problems arise?

Have two kids with Neons, both lost water pumps, then timing belts, which bent valves at about 100K! Fixed both (a 95, and a 00), the 95 we sold with about 220,000 on it, the '00 now has about 140,000. Despite what some say, they have been decent little cars.

Maintenance is the most important repair items you can do. Just changing oil and coolant at scheduled intervals prolongs the life of an engine measurably. New engines are manufactured with a life span of 100,000 miles, whereas the vehicles they are put in are only engineered to 80 to 90K miles. (That doesn't mean they will only last that long.) Keep in mind that routine maintenance is not that costly, and most items can be done by yourself with little time, effort, and/or training. The most costly maintenance items on any vehicle are tires and batteries. Get into the "habit" of maintenance checks (check oil and tires when you fill the gas tank) and little things like that. Your engine will last much longer. As for overcoming the abuse already suffered, think about getting that one fixed, or exchange the entire engine. There are many places which will do this work for less than one would think. Additionally, a $900 to $1,100 repair is far less costly than trying to trade-in junk at a dealer.
