Question:
The mechanic says it is the wheel bearings. This noise elevates the faster the car goes (ie X-way driving) to the point of having to yell to be heard. It sounds like a dull roar, maybe a little like a spinning whirl. Could this be the wheel bearings (will cost him $300 to fix). Thanks.

Car stops when hot, but temp gauge is cold and no steam?
Sure could. Is it louder when you turn one direction but not the other? If so than that is the problem. If it gets louder when you turn right it's the left wheel, and left turns is the right wheel. The extra wieght from the turn puts more pressure on the faulty tire. Pretty dangerous. The wheel could come off over time.My truck leaks power steering fluid, how much to fix it?

Sounds like wheel bearingsYes, it could be and most likely is. That is a common ailment on the Taurus (my dad's went as well), and if a mechanic told you that's what it is, I'd believe him. Sorry.

(you have to let me off tho, I am a girlie after all!! I didn't know what a 2000 Taurus was!! haha)
put the front end on jack stands and start the car and put it in drive. You should hear the noise when the wheels start moving. Then step on the brakes. If the noise stops, then it is most likely the bearings
Do the racing chips on EBay for 1 dollar actually work?
It probably is the wheel bearings - sounds like it. It could be the sound of a teenage boy, though. Try gagging him and see if it still makes the gosh aweful sound. Seriously though, it really does sound like the wheel bearings from what you described.cigarette lighter, R reg Citroen Xsara.?
It certainly sounds like it could be your wheel bearing. If you're unsure of your mechanic's integrity, get another opinion.

It sounds alot like the mechanic knows his stuff. The wheel bearing is the likely culprit.
1993 Buick Regal, while driving will cut out & shut off, any ideas?
Wheel bearings aren't drastically expensive, though to do the job yourself you'll need to take the hub into a shop to have the old bearings pressed out and the new bearings pressed in.
What all could possibly be wrong with a car that's been parked in a shed since October of 1991?
It's not like the old days when bearings almost fell out of the hub with some careful tapping.
I got new tires installed and then got an alignment, steering wheel shakes, should i get a rebalance?
Have the work done at a professional alignment shop, since they do that kind of thing all day long, they'll do it in less time and charge accordingly.

If car is over 100k miles, could this be a problem?
Dear ford motor; Usually the loud and irritating noise is the front wheel bearings. This is most common in these types of vehicles.300.00 dollars is a lot if you know how to replace the bearings yourself; if not then I guess it is okay to pay that amount.
