Does a dirty EGR make your car smoke and your overdrive light blink?

Question:
I know that i need an EGR, it drives fine sometimes and then other times it causes the car to jump and jerk, and on long trips maybe an hour driving it starts to smoke horribly

The EGR only allows inert exhaust gas into the engine to "take up space" in certain conditions. It will have no effect on overdrive or smoke. You have engine or transmission problems that must be looked at.
