Temperature sending unit for a ford 302?

Question:
I recently put a 4bbl manifold on my 77 mustang II. The manifold was stamped 289 on the bottom and the temp sending unit was a 1/4" pipe thread the temp sending unit on and my old manifold was 3/8" pipe thread. Well I found one to fit it, but now my temp reads too high on the gauge. I'd like to keep the factory look of the manifold, so I don't want to use reduces or couplers. It has a 180 deg. stat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's wrong with my engine?

You may not have a choice but to use reducers. Check to see if you have enough manifold boss there to have this manifold drilled and re threaded to 3/8". that may be the best option.

go to a parts store and ask the man at the counter for a water temp sending unit for a 1/4 thread for a guage with a 12 volt system not a idiot light. If the man knows what he is doing, he will have one in his hand in minutes from an old american motors or jeep or what ever as long as it is ford, american motors or Chrysler, you're in ballpark. GM won't work.
