i own a 2004 Mazda 3i 4-door with original tires 195/65-15...while looking for replacement tires, i was told that 225/50-15 size tires would fit the car without any adjustments and won't rub, is this true...

Maybe, but I wouldn't recommend it.P225/50R15 90 is an incredibly rare size. I doubt you would even find a tire store that stocks ANYTHING in this size so it would have to be special order. That's a pain, especially if you have a blowout later.
Purpose of overdrive in automatic transmission?
The overall diameter of the 225/50 tire is also more than an inch less than the OE tire which will cause serious errors with your odometer and speedometer.
Also, with only 6-inch rims the wider tire is going to be a tight squeeze. It will fit but if your looking for improved handling, you might be disappointed.

Might I suggest a P215/60R15 93H instead? This will give you a wider footprint while maintaining your speedometer and odometer accuracy. Or perhaps investing in a set of inexpensive new rims (about $100 each from the Tire Rack) and the hugely popular P205/55R16 89H tire size instead? That's what Mazda did for the next step up in performance for this car.
